How do I place a hold or recall for an item in the library?

Answer

If a library item, like a book or DVD, is checked out, you can place a Hold or Recall Request on that item. You can also place a Hold on an available item, so it's ready for you to pick up at the Circulation desk.

Placing a Hold

A Hold means that an item will be held for you at the Circulation Desk when it is returned by the patron or once Circulation staff has pulled the available item for you from the shelves.

  • Use the Library Catalog to place Holds on items.
  • First, sign into your account by clicking on the Login link on the top right and logging in.
  • Next, search for your items.
  • Click on the title of an item to go into its record.  Scroll to the bottom and click on "Place a Hold" then "Submit Request."
  • If you click on Your Account (top-right), you should see the item listed in your Holds and Recalls.
  • You'll receive an email when your item is ready for pickup at the Circulation desk.

Placing a Recall

A Recall is when a patron must return an item earlier than its due date (within 48 hours of the Recall Request). Please note that the current borrower is guaranteed a 3 week loan before an item can be recalled, so if an item was just checked out, you’ll have to wait several weeks before a recall can be issued.

Using Interlibrary Loan

If a book you need has been borrowed and a hold or recall will not be quick enough, you can place a request for that book using Interlibrary Loan.  In the “Notes” section of the ILL Book Request form make note that our current copy has been checked out.
