How do I create an annotation?

Answer

An annotation is the source's citation followed by a paragraph that describes, explains, and/or evaluates that source.  If you are writing annotations for a course assignment, check with your professor on what they'd like included in an annotation.  It may use all or some of this criteria.

Author: Who are the authors? What are their credentials?

Purpose: What is the main argument of the work?

Reader: Who is the intended audience?

Research: How was the research conducted (methodologies used / data analyzed)?

Conclusions: What were the author’s conclusions, and were they supported?

Bias: Is the author biased?

Assessment: How does this work compare to other scholarship in its field?

Reflection: How does this source inform (e.g. support or contradict) your argument? / How will it be used in your research?
