How do I find the full-text of an article in a library database?

Answer

Once you have found an article that you want to read in a database, you will have one of several options to find or request the full text of that article.

1.  Full text link
Within a database you may see a link directly to the PDF of HTML of the full-text.  By clicking on a full text link in either HTML or PDF format, you should immediately access the full text of the article.

2.  Full-Text / Article linker
You may also see a link that says "Get Full Text" or "Check for Full Text" or which means we have access to the full-text of the article in a different database.  Click on the link to be taken into that database.  You may have to click multiple links to get to the database. You may also hit a page from LibKey that you can clickthrough to get to the database with the full-text.

LibKey Nomad

Our full-text finder, LibKey, offers a free browser extension called LibKey Nomad.  LibKey Nomad is available for all browsers including Chrome, Firefox, and Safari.  When you find an academic article that has a DOI, LibKey Nomad will connect that DOI to the full-text in our databases if we have it.  It's another step before you request an item using Interlibrary Loan.

3. Google Scholar

Before requesting the full-text of an article through Interlibrary Loan, copy and paste the title of the article into Google Scholar. You might find the full-text of the article has been posted for free.

4.  Interlibrary loan
If the full text is not available, you can request the article through Interlibrary Loan. Articles are delivered electronically as PDFs within 1-3 business days.

  • Click on the "Request through Interlibrary Loan" link.
  • You will then sign into your ILL account with your Skidmore username/password.
  • The article request form will automatically be filled out for you. Simply submit the form.
  • When your article is ready, you'll receive an email. You'll log back into your ILL account and find the article by clicking on "Electronically Received Articles."
