How do I create a free account for the NYTimes website?

Answer

Skidmore students and employees can sign up for a free account for the NYTimes website. Students will have access to the account through the year they graduate, and employees will have access to an account for four years and then will have to renew that account.

1. Visit https://www.nytimes.com/activate-access/edu-access

2. Type “Skidmore” in the box and then select Skidmore College from the dropdown menu.

3. You will be presented with a splash page. Either click the "On Campus" option if you are currently on campus.  If you are off campus, click the “Go” button at the bottom. If you encounter a browser warning, click “ignore” to proceed.

4. Sign into or create your account.

  • If you do not have a NYTimes account:
    • Click "Create Account."
    • Type your Skidmore email and then a password.
    • Complete the registration form.
    • If you are a student, indicate “student” and enter your graduation date. If you are faculty or staff, select faculty/staff.
  • If you have a free NYTimes account with a Skidmore email address:
    • Click “Already have an account? Log in here.”
    • Enter your existing username (Skidmore College email address) and your New York Times account password.
    • If you are a student, indicate “student” and enter your graduation date. If you are faculty or staff, select faculty/staff.
  • If you have an existing (paid) NYTimes account with a Skidmore email address:
    • You will need to cancel the paid account first, before it can be associated with the Skidmore Site License. Cancel through customer care: customercare@nytimes.com / 800-591-9233 / Chat.
    • Once it's cancelled, that will "free up" the username so that it may be associated with the Site License (following the same process above).

Faculty/Staff - Renewing Your NY Times Account

If your account has expired it, you can renew it by following these steps:

2. Type “Skidmore” in the box and then select Skidmore College from the dropdown menu.

3. Click the “Go” button an then indicate that you are faculty/staff.

You should see a new expiration date that provides 4 year access.
