How do I use Google Scholar's Cited By function?

Answer

Google Scholar and some of our other databases provide a way to let you see who else has cited a source in their own work.  This can be a good way to see how one source has been utilized by other researchers and academics.  While this might give you a sense of the impact a source has had in its field, the list won't be perfect.  It will be affected by what types of sources might be citing another as well as the age of sources.

When you find a source in Google Scholar, you will see the tool "Cited By" at the bottom and the number of sources (listed in Google Scholar) who have cited this one.

The citation for the article "The Urbanization of the Eastern Gray Squirrel in the United States" with the tool "Cited by 76" highlighted with a green box.

If you click on the link, you can then see the list of sources.  You can either browse through this list or check the box "Search Within Citing Articles" to only search that smaller subset.

A results list in Google Scholar with the box "Search within citing articles" checked off and the terms "Red Squirrels" in the search box.
