How do I place a hold for an item in the library?
Answer
If a library item, like a book or DVD, is checked out, you can place a Hold on that item. A Hold means that an item will be held for you at the Circulation Desk when it is returned by the patron.
- Use the Discovery Search to place pickup requests on items.
- Search for your items. If any item has been checked out, you will see that it is unavailable.
- Click on the title of an item to go into its record. In the dropdown menu "Access options," select "Place Request." If not already, you will be prompted to sign into your library account.
- The pickup location will be the Circulation desk. Click on "Place Request."
You will receive an email when the item has been returned and is ready for you to pick up at the Circulation desk.
Placing a Recall
A Recall is when a patron must return an item earlier than its due date (within 48 hours of the Recall Request). Please note that the current borrower is guaranteed a 3 week loan before an item can be recalled, so if an item was just checked out, you’ll have to wait several weeks before a recall can be issued.
- To place a Recall Request, contact the Circulation Department at circ2@skidmore.edu.
Using Interlibrary Loan
If a book you need has been borrowed and a hold or recall will not be quick enough, you can place a request for that book using Interlibrary Loan. In the “Notes” section of the ILL Book Request form make note that our current copy has been checked out.
